Visa and Passport

An entry visa is not required for holders of passports from European Union countries. As a matter of reciprocity, a visa is required for those from some other countries in the rest of the world. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the planned date of arrival in Bulgaria.

The language spoken in Bulgaria is Bulgarian. English is widely taught in schools and a large share of the population understands English.



The climate of Bulgaria is characterized by four distinct seasons; spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Varna in late May is in the beginning of summer and the average temperature is 25℃.

Currency and Banking

Bulgarian Lev (BGN) is the Bulgarian monetary unit. Every currency, especially Euro and U.S. dollars, can be exchanged in almost every bank, currency exchange house and hotel.
Banking hours are 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, Diners and American Express are widely accepted.


Tax and Tipping

Value-added tax (VAT) is levied on most goods and services at a standard rate of 20% and is included in the retail price. Tipping is customary in Bulgaria. Sometimes, expensive restaurants and luxury hotels may add a service charge of 10%. Thus, you do not necessarily have to prepare for extra charges since it will be included in the bill.



The standard electricity supply is 220 volts.
